Pencil Grip = Life

My second born (Sawyer) is officially in kindergarten this fall! He is more challenging than my oldest son (who is in first grade *tear*). Sawyer is highly sensitive, strong willed, and most definitely (*undiagnosed*) ADD. These personality traits are only some of the reasons why homeschooling is the only option for him. He NEEDS the homeschool atmosphere to be successful in his education. I say this because I have had students like him in my classroom and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t give them 100% of what they needed when they needed it and for that, they struggled and so did I.

One thing Sawyer and I have been working on is pencil grip, pencil control, and writing. He wants so badly to be just like his older brother – especially when it comes to reading and writing. However, when he tries to write and it isn’t PERFECT he immediately shuts down. Part of his difficulty in writing was due to his poor pencil grip. Any kind of redirection of correction to his grip would result in complete shut down and a flare in his temper. I needed help!

Cue Amazon, as per usual. I searched for some pencil grips and the variety was overwhelming. With no prior experience with any (I have limited experience in early childhood education – I prefer teaching the older kids) I was shooting in the dark and decided to give one a try. Luckily, it was the right choice and I couldn’t be happier with them!

Sawyer’s frustration with pencil grip vanished the first time he used it! His writing is improving, his confidence is improving, and he doesn’t hold is pencil in extremely wonky ways anymore! This has made every aspect of his schooling more enjoyable for him (and me)! He is feeling more successful and IS more successful because he can focus less on his grip and more on the task at hand. IMG_5267

I have been more than impressed with these! It comes in a pack of 6 and all different colors! My younger two boys (ages 2 and 3) are even using them on their pencils when they “write” and it most definitely is creating some amazing grips already!

If working on pencil grip is making you go crazy or you are just wanting to work on starting your child out with a solid grip early on I highly recommend these! You can find them here:
